Biography
Born in Hilden, Germany, 1941
Lives and works in Düsseldorf, Germany
Widely recognised for his conceptual approach to books, photography and other material, Hans-Peter Feldmann bases his work on the collection and re-arrangement of pictures and all sort of objects emanating from our daily lives, in a mixture of ready-made and artistic intervention. Since the end of the 60s, when he produced his first Bilder booklets, Feldmann has questioned in his oeuvre the concept of the original and the problematics of a reproducible work of art. In all his works, whatever the format and medium is, he thematises the missing original. It is the multitude of reproductions that lends the original its uniqueness. Feldmann really paved the way for the “appropriation art” of the 1980s. His contribution to contemporary art is irrefutable and still exerting a strong influence on the younger, neo-conceptualist generation of artists. As Hans Ulrich Obrist put it: “For more than three decades, Feldmann has been legitimising previously illegitimate art, as Pierre Bourdieu [the late French philosopher] called it; he keeps removing fences between high and low. All of this makes him one of the most influential artists in the art world, an artist’s who is admired by Richard Prince, Fischli and Weiss and many other seminal figures”.
