Hans-Peter Feldmann
Biography
Hilden, 1941 – Düsseldorf, 2023 (GE)
Widely recognised for his conceptual approach to books, photography and other media, Hans-Peter Feldmann, a pioneer of artistic appropriation, based his work on the collection and re-arrangement of pictures and all sort of objects emanating from our daily lives, in a mixture of ready-made and artistic intervention. Whether playful, sentimental, voyeuristic, kitsch, irreverent or poetic, Hans-Peter Feldmann stripped our daily experiences bare. In an intuitive and spontaneous way he explored the world, captured and illuminated the mundane of everyday life, and kept reinventing himself. All of this made him one of the most influential artists in the art world, an artist’s who is admired by Richard Prince, Fischli and Weiss and many other seminal figures.
Feldmann began his art career as a painter, but he quickly abandoned the medium, not satisfied with his own technical skill. Whether it is a collage of photographs, a set of everyday objects or a tower of hats, Hans-Peter Feldmann turned present into past and vice versa. And in doing so, he enjoyed looking at the world in his unique way. Feldmann’ legacy to contemporary art is indisputable.
