For her second show at ProjecteSD, Ana Jotta has avoided any title. As she writes in her own hand-writen “folha de sala”: The title has also been removed to add it to the missing works. All the rest, which is much, is “editing life”. The exhibition is a quite straightforward display of three new works: an embroidered large textile work, a set of her ongoing project, the Plastifié, an open series in Jotta’s body of work, conceived by the artist as a visual equivalent of footnotes or quotes in a visual diary of sorts, they trace, sketch, record, and play with words, signs, colors and ideas. And a new bronze sculpture, a tree branch which seems to be shaped in the form of a “J”.
As João Fernandes wrote in 2005: “There is a playful principle that Ana Jotta uses in order to destabilise any type of frontier or limit between art and life. “If it is possible to appropriate everything as art, then we should do so”. Freed of grandiloquent manifestos or attitudes, but rather through the subversion of small daily gestures, Jotta’s work is a constant irreverence towards certainties and routines.
