ARTISSIMA, OVAL LINGOTTO FIERE, TURIN, ITALY

The group of works Iñaki Bonillas is presenting at Artissima Present Future gathers around the notion of secrecy. A longtime interest of Bonillas, this notion has infused works as distant as Diez Cámaras Documentadas acústicamente, from 1998, and as recent as the series Secretos, presented in Mexico City earlier this year. Of course, secrecy may appear as a paradox given the documentary, objective nature of most of Bonillas’ work, but this clash is precisely what has granted him a very unique and challenging territory from which to explore. As the pieces here presented clearly show, the diverse conceptual and material strategies he has devised to address this challenge, have allowed him not only to expand his ongoing research into the fundamentals of photography as a medium, but also to establish a rather powerful testimony of his very personal take on the world of the unseen, of the hidden, of the seclusive, and of the unfathomable.
